Tribeca loves Citibike! Though some neighbors do not love how dock locations are chosen. The purpose of this site is to advocate for better data and transparency in the decision-making process.

Over the last 6 months, we have analyzed daily usage of each Citibike dock in Tribeca, over the last 4 years, created and published surveys, attended numerous CB1 calls and spoken to DOT Commissioner, Ed Pincar. This site is repository for that research and conversation for the benefit of our neighbors and decision-makers.

Transparency

DATE:  March 1, 2021

TO:  Ed Pincar, Manhattan Borough Commissioner

Over the course of the last 6 months, we have been developing a tool for selecting Citibike dock locations (and expansion) in Tribeca. With your support, perhaps it can be used in CB1 and possibly other Communities.

The tool has 3-inputs:

  1. Dock usage data: rides per dock over a 4 -year period

  2. Rank-choice voting site for dock locations preferred by local stakeholders

  3. Citing criteria provided by the DOT

Some Data* & Controversy

Duane Street Dock

Elsewhere

Duane is among the least used docks in Tribeca

So why does the DOT want to expand the dock on Duane Street when other docks nearby need more capacity (based on data)?

By far, most Citibike rides to Tribeca start in Tribeca.

From 2016-2020, trips to Tribeca start in Tribeca at a rate nearly twice that of any other source of riders. See the data analysis)

Hideaway’s 1400+ votes

The Hideaway on Duane has a petition with 1400+ signatures appealing the DOT for CB1 to have a say in the location, placement and size of the Citibike docks in Tribeca.

Dock Expansion Paused

CB1 passed a resolution in September 2020 pausing dock expansions (Thank you!)

Citi HQ is busiest by far

The dock at N. Moore and Greenwich (Citi HQ) has by far the most ridership in the neighborhood.

11 months

Now with Covid in its 11th month, the DOT should work with CB1 to locate or expand docks away from stressed businesses, residential entrances and wherever people often gather.

Target/BMCC is #2

After Citi HQ, the dock on Murray & Greenwich is the 2nd busiest (Target | BMCC | Whole Foods).

8 years

It has been 8 years since the DOT received measured input from Tribeca on dock locations in the neighborhood.

“From One Female CEO To Another.”

Dear Jane Fraser,

Congratulations on your historic achievement at Citibank.  We are neighbors, you and I. Your HQ is just 5 blocks north of mine - we practically work together. I’d like to buy you a tea and scone, at my place, Duane Park Patisserie, and show you some good nearby alternatives to a planned eastward expansion of the Citibike dock on Duane Street.  This will harm my business, and I know you don’t want that.

I am the CEO of Duane Park Patisserie.  I have been running my business, single-handedly, on Duane Street for nearly 30 years.

I have withstood 9-11 when Humvees, not baby carriages, were outside my front door. I have withstood 2 economic collapses, Superstorm Sandy, a global pandemic and currently, the exodus of many of my customers to safer places beyond the City. But my undoing may well be branded “Citibike”. I love Citibike, and I am a card carrying member. So when I received a phone call recently from the DOT informing me that the nearby Citibike dock would be expanding East, right through my 3 outside (and only) tables, I could not believe my ears.

I am fighting to keep my business alive and continue to support not only my employees, but also the community, as I have done for years. I desperately need the outdoor seating in front of my bakery to continue.

Let’s send the DOT a solution, together.  For example, the 30-bike dock at Citi HQ (North Moore and Greenwich Street) is by far the most used in Tribeca. Let's expand around there, where it is needed most - or to any of the several better spaces between our 2 offices, on Greenwich.

And let me know about that tea. I make delicious scones! Looking forward to meeting you!
